Significance of the Lake Condah Area

The area is unique in many ways:

  • The Old Lake Condah Mission is one of the best examples of over 400 Aboriginal missions established in Australia.
  • The hundreds of Stone Huts, dating somewhere between 200-8,000 years, are of international significance and evidence of a transition to sedentary living.
  • The remains of a sophisticated system of eel & fish traps, channels, races and weirs are unique evidence of aquaculture of international significance.
  • The 20-year Eumeralla War of Resistance is nationally significant.
  • The legislation by the Commonwealth on behalf of the State Government for the hand back of the mission land is nationally significant.
  • The volcanic landforms are internationally significant.
  • The re-flooded lake and restored wetland would be an internationally significant restoration project.
  • Lake surprise at Mt Eccles is globally significant as a high quality record of climate and vegetation change over the past 30,000 years.
